Keys Grade School offers a program that unlocks the child’s potential for excellence through an experiential program rooted in the principles of inquiry and social justice.

Welcome to the Keys Grade School Website!

 About Us

We build the foundations of your child's academic excellence by veering away from rigid abstracts and focusing instead on making learning an experience in itself. We build on children's natural curiosity to fuel their desire to learn. We are an alternative grade school.

Keys is committed to providing progressive elementary education in the rich tradition and research-based standards of Bank Street College of Education .

Some of our children were asked why they think the school was named Keys. Here are some of their ideas:

“ Because it means opening kids’ minds ”

– Yumi Briones of 6’s and 7’s, SY 2006

“ Keys to open up and put in and to take out wonderful things ”

– Tanya Yoon of 7’s and 8’s, SY 2006

“ The treasure is in your mind.”

– Noah Soriano of 7’s and 8’s, SY 2006

Dear Parents,

Before opening our doors to welcome the children, we spent the summer building.  Literally, we have added a new building and new rooms to accommodate 145 children.  But of greater consequence, we spent the summer building and consolidating skills to educate along 21st century standards and to lay down common ground and vision for the children we aim to educate.

There is a popular book by Malcolm Gladwell, entitled, “The Outliers”. An “outlier” is a statistical observation that is markedly different from the others of the sample.  This year as in all years, we set out to educate “Outliers”.

To educate our Keys outliers, the entire faculty, staff and families will insist on persistence and excellence, without forgetting respect for the individual, imagination, empathy, kindness, collaboration and fairness.

What a formidable but exhilarating task!  Welcome to school year 09-10!
